A Hindu man has been killed in Bangladesh’s Feni district, adding to a growing list of violent incidents involving members of minority communities.

The victim, 27-year-old Samir Das, worked as an auto-rickshaw driver. His body was found on Monday in a crop field in Jagatpur village, located in the Daganbhuiyan upazila of the district.

According to local reports, Samir left his home on Sunday evening in his autorickshaw. When he did not return by night, his family began looking for him.

A search was conducted in the surrounding areas and contacts were made with people he normally met. Hours later, villagers discovered his frozen body lying in a field. Police were informed soon after and reached the spot to recover the body.

A Bengali daily, Daily Manobkantha, citing police and family members, reported that Samir had suffered multiple stab wounds. Early findings suggest he may have been taken to an isolated place and killed during an attempt to steal his vehicle.

Confirming the case, Daganbhuiyan Police Station Officer-in-Charge Muhammad Faizul Azim Noman said: “The body has been recovered and sent to the Feni General Hospital morgue for autopsy. His autorickshaw has not been found. The police have launched a special operation to identify and arrest those involved in the murder and recover the autorickshaw.”

Why the case has wider significance

This killing is the ninth such incident in the past 24 days, pointing to a worrying rise in violence affecting Hindu communities across Bangladesh.

Earlier this month, on January 9, India raised concerns over repeated attacks on minorities in the neighbouring country. New Delhi said it was closely monitoring the situation and expressed hope that those responsible for communal violence would be dealt with firmly.
